Mike was unsheltered and receiving services when Chef Kim first met him in the dining room. After lunch service one day, he asked if he could help by cleaning the dining area. That simple offer quickly became a routine—Mike showed up five days a week, reliably helping wherever he was needed.
Recognizing his commitment and positive attitude, the team invited Mike to become a regular volunteer, assisting behind the scenes in the kitchen with any task that needed attention. His strong work ethic and willingness to help did not go unnoticed. When a part-time position opened in the dish room, Mike was hired.
Not long after, a full-time driver position became available, delivering meals twice daily to the CARES Campus Homeless Shelter. Mike stepped into the role and continues to serve in this position today. Within just one month of employment, he was able to secure his own apartment and move out of the shelter—a major milestone in his journey toward stability.
Mike has shared that his past has been painful and difficult, but he is deeply grateful for the compassion and support he received from Chef Kim and the entire kitchen team, who believed in him and offered him another chance at progress and happiness. Today, Mike continues to make meaningful strides in his personal life and is a valued and integral member of the dining room team.
