Plates to Ease Poverty is Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada’s annual fundraiser which raises money to support ongoing services. Our 2017 event is not yet scheduled. Join our email list for all the latest news and updates.
Our annual Plates to Ease Poverty gala has been growing and changing for close to a decade. While our agency's history goes all the way back to 1941, Plates began just eight years ago. Believe it or not, our first fundraiser took place in the backyard of one of our most prominent board members, Tom Dolan. Guests recall an intimate gathering, with just a handful of local people in attendance, all of them with a common interest in fighting poverty. The original fundraiser was referred to as the Bishop's Dinner.
As the years went by, the event morphed into a much larger event known as the Bishop's Humanitarian Award Dinner, and it has traditionally hopped around from casino to casino each year. At every event, the Bishop honors a local person or group with his prestigious Humanitarian Award, which recognizes someone in the community who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to bettering the lives of people in our community who are homeless, hungry and poverty-stricken.
In 2013, the event was renamed Plates to Ease Poverty in order to better reflect the mission of Catholic Charities & The St. Vincent's Programs. The awards dinner and fundraiser is a special evening dedicated to focusing on the many ways in which we ease the pain of poverty in Northern Nevada, and the supporters who make that possible. We still present the annual Humanitarian Award to a deserving recipient.
Most importantly, Plates is just a really great party. Join us for dinner, drinks, a silent auction, a live presentation, and an exciting surprise entertainer. It's a night you won't soon forget.
